RESTORATION OF CASA VICENS
Casa Vicens was the first work built by the modernist architect, Antoni Gaudí in 1885; a summer residence in the village of Gràcia. It was renovated and extended by Joan Baptista Serra de Martínez in 1925, and unfortunately underwent several alterations between the 1960s and the 1990s. In 2005 the house was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The refurbishment recovers the original appearance of the first two interventions and adapts its use to a contemporary house museum.
The approach to the Vicens house was done with a healthy distance and independence. Working in a surgical manner, the missing parts of the original work were replaced by new additions. Out of respect for Gaudí's original work and with the desire to recover it, it was agreed to remove the various elements added in the 1965 extension, which significantly modified the north-west façade and made it difficult to interpret the building as a whole.
The intervention aims to revive Gaudí's original work on the façade and interiors. The extension works by Joan Baptista Serra de Martínez was another of the heritage values to be preserved. The interiors of the extension, which had been badly manipulated when the original single-family house was converted into a multi-family house, were cleaned up and freed to accommodate the new staircase, lift and museum spaces that complement the original house. The intervention in these spaces has allowed the placement of the installations required for the museum, thus freeing up the space of the original house.
It is a project of conciliation between the different architectural interventions that have taken place throughout the years.
